I had posted about using Micromax USB Modem on Ubuntu 12.04 here.One visitor requested me to post the screen shots. Here they are:
The above screen shot shows that there is no network connection.
The above screen shot shows the commands to be typed in the terminal. After this you insert the modem in USB slot.
The above screen shot shows that the modem has been working. Please note that Network Manager is not showing anything so far. You need to wait upto 3 minutes till it shows on Network Manager
The above screen shot shows that the Network Manager has detected a new Mobile Broadband connection. Please note the clock time.

itz a gr8 tip. . . . .
rubbish , you don't have to type all those commands . just connect your modem and wait for some time .just wait. your modem will be detected.use network manager to connect.
@Raja
I tried your suggestion and it does not work. When I type lsusb in terminal my modem is shown as follows:
Bus 001 Device 004: ID 1c9e:9605 OMEGA TECHNOLOGY
Perhaps your modem is different and may work without manually loading the modules. If your modem ID is 1c9e:9605 then please open the file /etc/modules and see which modules are getting loaded on boot.
I have been using this modem since last 2 years and in Ubuntu 10.04 I had to use usbmodeswitch first and then load usbserial module with the above ID.
In Ubuntu 12.04 usbmodeswitch works but usbserial with the above ID is required to be loaded or option module (which detects this ID) is required to be loaded either through /etc/modules file on boot or with sudo modprobe command.
If you don't respond to this comment and tell me the ID of your modem I may delete your rubbish comment.
bos hw to use micromax mmx352g modem in ubuntu 10.04 or ubuntu 9.10.
@Arun Nair
Please read this post for Ubuntu 10.04
On Ubuntu 10.04 and previous versions when you plug-in the Modem it gets mounted as a CD. ID of mounted device is different e.g. in my case it was 1c9e:f000
Then you need usb-modeswitch to switch the modem and the usb-modeswitch-data file should cover this ID (eg in my case it was 1c9e:f000). After mode-switching the ID changes and it gets detected as Modem (in my case the changed ID was 1c9e:9605).
In Ubuntu 12.04 the mode-switching is working.
After mode-switching the usbserial module should get loaded but it does not. In Ubuntu 10.04 the command was sudo modprobe usbserial vendor=0x1c9e product=0x9605 You can replace the vendor and product ID applicable in your case.
There is a script Sakis3g which can also be used for mode-switching and loading the module on Ubuntu 10.04.
sorry for that rude comment. I have been using ubuntu since 9.04 and had never used command line for activating internet connection. I am not using the micormax modem ,but i have tested my friend's micromax modem on ubuntu 10.04 and 10.10 but not on 12.04. I never had to use usbmodeswitch. At first when you connect the modem nothing seems to happen. but after waiting for some time network manager automatically picks up your device. believe me. try this -open log file viewer and connect your modem and see what is going on. Again sorry for being rude.
@Raja
To the best of my knowledge most Micromax modems need mode-switching but your friend's modem may be an exception. If it is possible insert your friends modem and let me know its ID by typing lsusb in terminal.
Just to experiment I tried my modem on Ubuntu 11.10 Live CD and it works as you describe i.e. New Mobile Broadband connection appears on Network Manager. This is happening because usb-modeswitch package is available and ID of my modem is included in mode-switch-data file and usbserial is getting loaded.
On Ubuntu 12.04 mode-switching is working but usbderial is not getting loaded hence the commands.
I did what u did & waited for almost 15 minutes but ubuntu didnt recognise my modem...
I am using MMX353G 3G modem
